RTM under fire for 'selective coverage'

RADIO Televisyen Malaysia came under attack in the house for being selective in its live telecast.

Datuk Mohamad Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) set the ball rolling and tthe matter was pursued by M. Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) and other opposition members.

Aziz said he understood that the daily 30-minute live telecast of Question Time over TV1 did not show everything that happened in the house.

He said TV1 had cut out scenes of members bickering or when there was an exchange of words.

"I received phone calls and text messages from the public about this. Let it be like before when people could watch the entire proceedings until 10.30am.

"If there are squabbles, let the public watch for themselves and decide," Aziz said.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee called on the relevant authorities to take note of the views expressed in the house.

Since the start of the current Dewan Rakyat sitting, the TV1's live telecast of Question Time switched between the proceedings in the house and interviews at the RTM studio at Parliament. Previously, the live telecast would go on for 30 minutes without any break.

These days, an MP is invited to the studio every day to share his or her views on questions and answers by ministers or their deputies.

Opposition members complain privately that the camera is panned to the studio every time their members ask a question…LAGI…

Para pembuat dasar media di negara ini perlu memberi pendekatan baru terhadap liputan yang dibincangkan di parlimen itu. Sekiranya diperhatikan terdapat stesen TV dan juga media perdana lain yang mengmbil pendekatan yang seboleh mungkin tidak memberi “mileage” kepada pembangkang. Sekiranya adapun ia berbentuk “Opposition Bashing" dengan melaporkan berita negatif mengenai parti lawan.

Peranan media perlu diubahsuai dalam memenuhi tuntutan dan keperluan zaman yang kini jauh berbeda. Pendekatan yang digunapakai sebelum merdeka kini sudah tidak sesuai kerana “sophisitication media baru yang pelbagai bentuk.

Masanya sudah tiba untuk media managers mengenalpasti dan mencari formula dan pendekatan baru cara bagaimana melakukannya. Sekiranya perkara ini tidak dilakukan mereka pula nanti akan dipersalahkan kerana menggunakan pendekatan tidak sesuai dalam arena peperangan saraf politik dalam dunia globalisasi semasa.
